Ruby Old Fashioned

Ruby Old Fashioned from The Ruby Kitchen - a modern twist on a classic cocktail

Ruby Old Fashioned from The Ruby Kitchen - a modern twist on a classic cocktailIn April my husband and I took a trip to Louisville, KY and spent a long weekend enjoying everything it has to offer, including its pride of bourbon. We packed a ton of activities into just a few days, including a tour of the distillery that produces Bulleit Bourbon. When we hit the road to head home we also stopped at the Buffalo Trace distillery. Spending time at each of these distilleries really gave me an appreciation for bourbon that I did not have before.

Big Daddy’s Bundt Cake

Big Daddy's Bundt Cake from The Ruby Kitchen

It is that time again when I share this month’s choice for the Cake Slice Bakers group. This month we had four options to choose from: Big Daddy’s Bundt Cake (no, I didn’t name it!), Dione’s Chocolate Roll, Aunt Leah’s Raspberry Bars or Marmalade Gingerbread. I haven’t made a Bundt cake in years (since high school actually) so I headed to the store to buy a Bundt pan. I love the look of a lovely Bundt cake and there are so many lovely design options for the pans. I went with the classic one since I did not have one already but I see more types in my future!

Simple Meringue 101

Meringue 101 from The Ruby Kitchen

Meringue 101 from The Ruby Kitchen

I have always loved the simplicity of meringue. With four ingredients you are able to make light as air cookies or bowls that melt in your mouth. They are dangerously addictive. Making bowls and filling them with your favorite curd, preserve or chocolate are a simple and easy dessert. I have even included two templates to use in the recipe.

Greek Burgers

Greek Burgers with Cucumber Sauce from The Ruby Kitchen

One of my favorite things to experiment with in the kitchen in burgers because you almost can’t go wrong. Do you remember the meatball burgers I made quite some time ago? They were such a big hit with my husband that he frequently requests them for dinner. Personally, I do not like a patty with a lot of fuss and ingredients. I want to taste the beef and let the toppings and sauces take center stage so I usually form patties and only season them with salt and pepper just before cooking.

Blueberry Nut Loaf

Blueberry Nut Loaf from The Ruby Kitchen

I cannot believe it is already time for me to post this month’s Cake Slice Baker’s choice. If you missed last month’s you can still check it out. This month we had to choose from an English Madiera Cake, Haleaka Cake, Blueberry Nut Loaf or Texas Chocolate Muffins. I chose the Blueberry-Nut Loaf Cake because blueberry season is closer now that the days are warm and I cannot wait to go picking.

Sprinkle Baby Shower

Sprinkle Baby Shower from The Ruby Kitchen

Wow I cannot believe it has been almost three weeks since my last post! A lot has been going on in my little world and I just haven’t been able to sit down and write during the chaos. We spent two weeks buried in house projects getting ready for a home appraisal. I also hosted a baby sprinkle for my best friend and the morning after it my husband and I hit the road towards Louisville, Kentucky. We had an amazing trip and I have some fun things planned to share with you from it, but today I wanted to show you how much fun it was to host a baby sprinkle!

Chocolate Brownie Cheesecake

Brownie Cheesecake from The Ruby Kitchen

I was recently invited to be a part of The Cake Slice Bakers. It is a group of fellow bloggers and cake lovers who bake their way through a book and share the results. Right now we are baking our way through Cakes by Maida Heatter. I have to admit I was intimidated at first. Only over the past few years have I really embraced my inner baker and while I had known of Maida in a broad sense I had never owned any of her books. Maida goes into wonderful detail in her recipes and the entire beginning of the book is dedicated to the “why” behind many of her recipes and the tools she uses. That is my kind of book!

Easter Candy Spoons (and The Bunny That Got Away)

Easter Candy Spoons (and The Bunny That Got Away) from The Ruby Kitchen

Aside from the blizzard we had the winter has been pretty mild here in Maryland. I am happy to say though that spring is finally here! Birds are chirping, bunnies are hopping all over and the days are slowly getting warmer. On one of my grocery store trips I was surrounded by Easter candy and I became so inspired by all the fun colors. Easter really has some of the most fun candy. What better way to enjoy it than with yummy white chocolate? These are wonderful to stir into your morning cup of coffee or eat as an afternoon sugar fix.

Sheepish Pot Pie

Sheepish Pot Pie from The Ruby Kitchen

You may be wondering what the deal is with the name of this. It is a strange little cross between a pot pie and shepherds pie that I came up with one day when I had a craving for pot pie. Growing up we sometimes had those frozen ones for dinner and it was always a fun meal as a kid. I mean, who doesn’t love a small sized pie just for them? I remember they took forever to bake but it all seemed worth it once you broke the crust and spooned piping hot pot pie into your mouth. Although, a bit of warning – I did try one of those frozen pot pies as an adult and it did not have the same appeal as it did as a child. Shocking, right?

Perfect Peanut Butter Frosting

Perfect Peanut Butter Frosting from The Ruby Kitchen

Something strangely magical happened the other day. It was so serendipitous in fact that I grabbed my camera and snapped a few photos so I could share it with you. I was making chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting for my mother in-law’s birthday and experimenting with my recipe. She loves peanut butter so I wanted it to be super creamy and irresistible. I played with the ratios a bit and it happened – perfect peanut butter bliss.
