Instant Hot Cocoa

The days are getting colder here on the East coast which means threat of snow and ice has finally become a reality. I love a hot cup of coffee or tea, but sometimes a good cup of hot cocoa is needed. When you have spent a good part of the day shoveling snow or playing with the kids it is the perfect way to thaw.

I like to always make sure there are several things on hand to be prepared and avoid swarm of panic stricken people well before weather is even in the forecast. Salt and old towels are near the door and the pantry is stocked with ingredients needed for chili or stew. Another things that is always near is instant hot cocoa.

This hot cocoa can be stored for several months and all you need to do once is add hot water (although milk makes it even more decedent). Whipped cream and a shaving of chocolate is my preferred topping. Marshmallows, peppermint essential oil or some leftover candy canes are also good standbys.

Instant Hot Cocoa

1½ cups dry powdered milk
1 cup powdered sugar
¾ cup quality cocoa powder
1 oz. chocolate, finely grated
1 tsp salt

  1. Thoroughly whisk ingredients together or combine in a food processor.
  2. Store in an airtight container or mason jar.
  3. To make a cup of hot cocoa: Pour one cup of warm milk or water over 2-3 tablespoons of cocoa mix and stir until dissolved.
